My sisters Paula Goodell and Laura Engler joined me for a very memorable hike down the Bill Hall trail to Thunder River, the Colorado River and Deer Creek August 5 - 14, 2000. All photos taken by Paula Goodell.... with the exception of those containing Paula... which were taken by Laura Engler Without their efforts these pages would not have been possible...... I took this hike 4 years ago and the campgrounds at Deer Creek are no longer the same. There must have been a flash flood earlier this year that washed out the campgrounds and knocked down most of the dead cottonwoods that were burned in the famous toliet paper fire several years ago. (as described in the video that comes with a backcountry permit) Roy |
GETTING TO THE BILL HALL TRAIL HEAD On the road again.... |
THE DESENT BEGINS There was a fire.... that burned out of control.... on the North Rim.... bout 4 years back.... |
THE TRAIL TO THUNDER RIVER Surprise Valley is in the background. |
LOWER TAPETES AND THE HIKE TO DEER CREEK Resting on the finial desent to the Colorado.... Some of the most interesting trails are between the Upper Tapeats and Lower Tapeats campgounds.... If you cross the creek the trail is considerably easier (so I've been told). |
UPPER DEER CREEK Trail crossing over Dreer Creek.... |
DEER CREEK CAMPGROUND Deer Creek campground.... If a flash flood occurs here... You won't miss it.... Of course being on the bank would be wise! |
MID DEER CREEK Our favorite shower.... |
LOWER DEER CREEK Looking down on the Colorado. |
THE TRAIL OUT OF DEER CREEK Surprise Valley.... It was hot... so hot that we were not mentally alert.... lost the trail 5 times durring the day.... |
